tirsden: a creepy child swings on a creepy swing (d!sc0 k!llz!!!!!!1!11!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!)

I keep seeing a certain set of commercials on TV, and they continue to disturb me. So it's time to rant. I bring before the court of my LiveJournal friends, stalkers, and the internet in general, the following product: GLAD Press 'n Seal Wrap. But first, let me back up a step.

Anyone know where plastic comes from? It's a petroleum byproduct. Researchers are finding that if you microwave food in a plastic container, the carcinogous qualities of the plastic go right into your food. Same with freezing food in plastic containers. I'm not going to provide proof of this research because I know if you are truly interested, you'll go looking. The media and of course the producers of plastic don't exactly want this going around, but it's out there. You just have to be curious. Or concerned.

Anyways, now we have GLAD Press 'n Seal Wrap. It looks like sturdy Seran wrap, but you can merely firmly press the thin plastic around the edges of something and it will stick. I'm sorry, but I have got to wonder how it's doing that, and I am rather concerned that they don't tell us on the commercials. Trade secret, I suppose. Even so, do you really want that on your food? I mean, we've already stated that plastic in general is already a questionable container for food. Plastic with some sort of heat or pressure activated adhesive all over it is even more cause for concern. Assuming that's how it works (again, that trade secret concept).

And then they show food being microwaved with the Press 'n Seal stuff on it. Ugh! Yes, they claim it is microwave safe and all that, but "they" have been claiming that thick plastic is microwave safe for quite some time now. To me, this whole thing is just plain scary. On an environmental level, here we are making even more stuff to put in landfills. On a health level, we're creating more ways to get the essence of petroleum byproducts into our food. Yummy.

I'm wondering if all the plastic things we use in our households are making us sick slowly but surely. Will we be dying of cancer in 20, 30, 40 years because we ate our food on plastic plates (even if we didn't microwave it on that plate) or because we drank water out of the average plastic bottle? Ever tasted newly unsealed but extremely dated water out of a plastic bottle or jug? It tastes like plastic. That's because it has plastic floating around in it. Yummy?

Perhaps you think I'm being a little too paranoid. Perhaps you don't believe the whole microwaving plastic business. When has something like this happened before? A product that people thought was perfectly safe (and beneficial) and turned out to be one of the worst mistakes in history? Asbestos. Lead paint. Recalled drugs of all sorts, especially antidepressants and diet pills. Those are the ones that come to mind, I'm sure you can come up with more.

And there you have it. I have ranted, and if I'm dead within the week, you'll know it's true. *snort* No actually, I don't expect anything like that, but I want you to think. I myself am unsure what to do about this, being as our society is severely dependent on plastic. Heck, I'm typing this on a plastic keyboard under my plastic-infused, hot pink Christmas lights as my plastic My Little Pony on my plastic monitor looks at me like I'm a fruitcake. Back atcha, I say.
