Timeline: late spring, 2008

Riddick ended up taking a lot of heat for the Playgirl incident, and laid low playing good teacher for a while. It was at least a month later when an opportunity to talk to Richter came up, and the irony was that it was the school that instigated the meeting. Richter's respect for the teacher was obvious from his grades, so the principal wondered if Riddick could encourage the boy to expand his talents to the other subjects. Riddick set up a time to talk to Richter one day after school, but was kept waiting because the boy managed to land himself in detention in Ms. Herbert's home-ec class.

Once Richter arrived, it was just him and his teacher alone in the classroom. Riddick had to be very careful about crossing the line, as he didn't want to scare Richter, or be labeled a sex offender and lose his job. He first talked about how the school wanted him to try and turn Richter's grades around, but the teacher said he honestly thought the school could take a flying fuck and that Richter was doing great. There were so many things the school didn't take into account. Riddick had noticed Richter's clothing was shabby, that the boy only missed art class when a few days later he would show up sporting new bruises or holes in his clothes, and well... it didn't take much to figure out the boy's home life had to be crap.

Riddick then crossed the line and asked Richter about the looks the boy had been giving teacher when student thought him not looking. The Furyan asked if the feelings behind those looks were serious, and Richter admitted they were, and that Riddick was the only reason he was still in school at all. Riddick said that he'd wanted to ask earlier in the conversation if someone cared for the boy, and that the teacher would like to be the answer to that question. Richter... Stefan... having trouble believing this was really happening, agreed. It was at this point that Riddick began referring to his student as Stefan in his thoughts and in private, and Stefan in turn no longer thought of his teacher as Mr. Riddick, but as Riddick.

Well, Riddick had keys to the room and somebody had pranked the little window in the door with a full coating of spray paint recently, so... anyone with a twisted imagination can imagine what happened next. Afterwards the teacher took his student out to eat at a nice Thai place and made a comment that if anyone asked, the two were now in the Big Brother program. The teacher then shared stories of his wilder exploits, including running guns across the Mexican border and being part of a team of six who burned down the magic castle at Disneyland. He pointed out that none of the crap he was into was drug-related, as he feels a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Barring alcohol, but then getting smashed is only for special occasions worth the aftermath.

Anyways, there was a problem with the Disneyland plans, though they went down without a hitch; afterwards one of the six turned on the rest and snitched. Everyone had clean alibis and there was no other evidence, so the charges had to be dropped, and it took Riddick a year and a half to make sure the traitor learned his lesson. Riddick also reminisced about fights, street racing, and killing someone in Venice. Nothing surprised Stefan beyond the fact that Riddick had been to Venice. The teacher hadn't mentioned that side-trip in class, though it had happened during the Furyan's exchange student trip to Paris in his senior year of high school.

When Riddick dropped Stefan off at Lee Towers, the sun was setting, or it would have been more easily noticed that the rundown apartment building had no power. As it was, the teacher remained clueless as to the student's real state of life in part because Stefan was too embarrassed to admit the truth. The teacher insisted Stefan keep the ample leftovers from the meal and gave the boy his card, with home address and phone number on it. The Furyan drove away wondering just how awful Stefan's family life must be with having to move to a place like that, a change that hadn't even been registered with the school. Little did Riddick know...

Riddick missed being able to spend the next afternoon with Stefan because of a school board meeting, and the next morning the teacher woke up with a raging migraine. He didn't get them very often, and hadn't ever called in sick during the time Stefan was in high school, but today he'd had to. He was miserable and couldn't sleep and lying on the couch when the doorbell rang. He guessed correctly that it might be Stefan, being as it was just about long enough after Riddick's first missed class that one could ditch school and walk to the teacher's house. His feeling like shit made him a lot harder for the student to read than he otherwise would have been, but before long Riddick was back crashed on the couch with just enough light coming through a crack in the front curtains for Stefan to park in the nearby comfy chair.

Riddick noticed Stefan seemed chilled in the air conditioning and told the boy there were blankets in the hall closet, telling the kid to make himself at home. "What's mine is yours," which the teacher was serious about. Then he remembered that something in the place literally was the student's, and gave the boy an impromptu homework assignment of finding it. Didn't take long, in the bedroom Stefan found two things sitting together, firstly a sketch Riddick had been working on of Stefan staring out a window at school; all there was in the image was Stefan's head and upper body. The other present was a new cell phone, one of the cheaper models meant for pre-pay, with a bunch of time loaded onto it (Stefan had told Riddick when he got dropped off two evenings ago that he had no phone).

Stefan came back with his finds and snuggled into a big, fluffy blanket which just happened to be Riddick's favorite. The teacher was feeling like he could sleep finally, and did. (He was sick literally because of stress and worry over Stefan, and was now feeling better with the boy safe under his roof, but the Furyan didn't realize this. Those of us who are used to migraines could call that one fairly easily, though.) Stefan also dozed, though tiny sounds disturbed him. Riddick noticed this after waking up again a few hours later, but left silently to let the boy keep sleeping. The teacher was feeling much better, though seriously cold like the end of all the really bad migraines, and hopped in the shower to do something about that with hot water. He'd plugged in a soft green night light so he could keep his goggles off but Stefan could join him if the student wished. Insert shower kink here! xP

Ahem. Yes. Good stuff. (This would write faster if I'd quit reading the logs. 8D ) Onwards. Riddick remembered that he had a phone call to make, and once the shower was over with and Stefan had some decent, borrowed clothes to wear, the teacher got pancakes going while calling his college buddy and lawyer Archer. The rather one-sided conversation was confusing for the student, but Riddick didn't explain it, though his words to Archer were along the line of settling with someone over a court case. Then there were pancakes to devour and Riddick's phone conversation inspired him to do something specific with Stefan. It required a trip through Hollywood and up through Beverly hills to the outskirts of the decadent community, and another fun ride for Stefan in Riddick's killer car.

The large, two-story plantation-style home Riddick pulled up in front of had a huge garage visible on the back left side, but Riddick used the sidewalk up to the main door. He had a key for the place, and explained it was part of his inheritance. His parents had been rich, and it wouldn't be a problem now except that a greedy half-sister had forged a will and in the end, the judge told the two to split the inheritance or nobody would get it. As a matter of honor, Riddick had let the money rot indefinitely while Archer fielded offers from the other side. The Furyan could get by on his own with the money he had, but with someone else's wellbeing to consider now... he wanted to settle. These words moved Stefan to tears, and Riddick asked what was wrong. The teacher wanted the truth from his student, all of it, no matter what it was.

It turns out Stefan had run away from home at the beginning of high school, and the place he was living now was completely abandoned other than the druggies and thugs who lived there now. He'd been coming to school only because Riddick was there, as well as food for low income students. The Furyan was appalled at this news, and declared that Stefan was moving in with him immediately. They went to the apartment building to rescue Stefan's tarantula Spinner along with a huge amount of sketches covering the walls of the place, but the student chose to leave everything else behind. He was in much better hands now.
