I'm posting from teh new machine! Funny cuz I was so frustrated on the umpteenth XP install that I decided not to call my computer Riddick as in all the other attempts, and called it Crematoria instead (that's the really nasty hot planet/prison from The Chronicles Of Riddick). Hey, what can I say, I ain't changing it now. Besides, that freed up Riddick for my user account. Hehee.

I think the second ram slot in the motherboard is bad... the computer is now quite happy with itself once I figured that out and split up the RAM sticks into the first and third slots. Well, it's happy other than the onboard sound card refuses to work (dunno what's up with that) but the Soundblaster PCI card I stuck in there is working fine. Without having to hunt down drivers on the net. That's *one* good thing for XP. XP Good Things 1, XP Crap Things 29019823.

Oh wells, teh new machine is about a 2.2ghz ASUS with 1 gig of ram, a 128mb GeForce MX 4000, and a DVDR/W. And for some reason I keep expecting it to blow up in my face. But after 2 nights of hell in hardware/operating systems, I guess I'll give this thing a good run for it's money and see if it'll install/run EverQuest without dying. GO PC GO! Oh and once again, thanks to blackmanta for the tower/motherboard. ♥

Now somebody bless this thing with some kinda luck mantra so it keeps playing nice. LOL. And massive, massive kudos to this guy for publishing exactly what I needed. (Not only did it get XP to install completely and without error, but it helped lead to my discovery of the second memory slot issue.)

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this. Yeah, I forgot about the part about the RAM slots. It's not that they're bad, that's just how the RAM is supposed to be set up due to the architechture of the board. I know it sounds fucked-up, but go figure. :\

Sorry to hear you had so many problems installing XP. When I got my new mobo I had similar problems, and then I found out that I needed a copy of XP with Service Pack 2 already installed. So I had to chuck my older copy of XP and cough up another $99 for another OEM version. :(

Also sad you decided to quite WoW, especially now since I've been getting back into it lately. I've joined a new guild and everything. :(

Heh well my WoW account is good till... the 9th? But I've been finding EQ to be more fun now, plus there've been a lot of changes to it since last I played. Dude, a mail system, quest log, completely redone interface... seems almost like WoW LOL... except I have two characters over 50 and one with a horse. I think that's one reason why I went back... plus I'm notorious for not asking for help on quests when I need it, so my WoW chars were ending up with a lot of Elite quests they couldn't do but didn't wanna knock off the list. Meh.

About the memory, I'm noticing that one stick by itself is fine (either stick) but together they get tons of errors with Memtest86. Doesn't seem to matter what slots I use either... ideas? I'm gonna go post my troubles over on the computer help forum again as well, see what I can find out. There are two kinds of BSODs I get right now while running XP, one is random and Google says it's usually associated with bad memory, and the second *always* happens as soon as I try to Shut Down Windows, and is also supposedly from bad memory. But if the memory isn't set up right (how would I set it up right?) then that could be the issue. As I remember, it still gives the Shut Down BSOD even running just one stick.
