One conversation from a day or two ago was about the possibility of the 4D game. Someone said that'd be impossible, so I suggested Time for the forth dimension since WoW sucks up so much of it. (This would apply to any MMORPG most likely.)
Me: psyche out your friends.. "pff, 3D, oldschool. I play a 4D game!"
And then earlier today, on a different subject:
Me: darn, goggles require engineering? blaah. ...as in, to wear ...kinda like keys require blacksmithing (why!? rofl) ..."yes, let me use my smithing knowledge... I shall beat this chest open with this key"
...man I'm so tired it's taking me three runs just to spell things right. LOL. *passes out*

4D games... cool
Date: Mar. 22nd, 2006 11:53 pm (UTC)Some games have skills or potions that allow a player to "speed up" WRT the other players. Well, you know that -- you're the RPG maven.
The ultimate "speed up" would be to freeze the action, like in Terry Pratchett's "The Thief of Time." (Since you're on dial-up, you probably wouldn't notice if some player froze you anyway.)
Going into the future... Well, you could log off and then log back on. That puts you into the future. Otherwise, I don't care if you're in a virtual reality -- causality must be obeyed.
Going back in time would certainly be possible. I would offer two versions:
1. a dream-like experience where the player can only view the past -- not interact with it.
2. an actual roll-back-the-clock mode that you could change history in, only you couldn't go back into more than one past at a time.
So, let's do it! I'm excited!
LOL... this reminds me of an MMO I proposed to Nick Yee's MMORPG study
Date: Mar. 23rd, 2006 07:37 am (UTC)Then I thought, what if you started in the middle ages if you wanted to, and then could choose to have a "long sleep" kinda thing and wake up in the modern age? The modern age would be on a new server (so in essense, it would be a character transfer) and you couldn't go back, just like real time. Now, let's say your friend from the midieval era was playing a mildly psychotic vampire character when you left, but hadn't done anything "big," as in "event creating/changing big."
So you arrive at the future, start getting used to this new world of modern conveniences and attitudes, and then there's a patch (server goes down for maintenance, etc.) When you come back, all of a sudden your friend has appeared in the modern age and he is superpowerful and... rules the world? Okay that might be extreme, but he's here and he's BIG. And maybe other things have changed. Maybe vampires were keeping to themselves, but now they're all over the streets in great numbers causing mayhem thanks to your old pal. (Heh, what would player reaction be to that, I wonder? I can see someone shouting "what n00b screwed the plotline!?")
There of course it the problem of someone who's been playing on the modern server wanting to change history... so they go created a new character on the medieval ages server and mess with things. On the flip side of this argument, this would give you the power to control time and interact indirectly with "future" lives over on the modern server. One thing's for sure... this constant time flux between events on the past and present servers would be hell to maintain!
Who knows, maybe it's too much to ask. It's fun to think about tho... yeah, let's do it! XD Now who do we hire to make this thing... hmm... NOT JACK THOMPSON rofl!
